United States / DRC - The National Self Withdraws from the Global Body, Allowing a Virus to Consume the Other
Event Baseline: The United States dismantled its global health capacity and is doing little to help contain an Ebola outbreak in central Africa, after massive cuts to public health efforts.
The American state imagines it can sever itself from the world and be safe. It has cut the funding, the personnel, the will. So a virus that could spread anywhere is allowed to burn through a vulnerable population. This is the illusion of the fortress: if we ignore the fire in the neighbor's house, it won't reach ours. But viruses do not respect national boundaries. The negligence is a form of violence, a choosing to let die. The self identifies with its own resources and cannot see the interconnectedness of the whole Earth. The experts are 'racing' but without the necessary tools because the political self decided 'America First'. This suicidal logic will ensure that the outbreak grows, and eventually, the forsaken other will become the intruder. The body of humanity is one, and the refusal to heal any part of it guarantees collective sickness. The cuts are self-inflicted wounds on the global immune system.
