The state self uses the other when useful, then casts it out when the tribal purpose changes. These individuals adopted the American identity, but the American self never accepted them as part of its body. The illusion of a shared mission is shattered by the mechanical logic of exclusion. The brain creates categories of loyal and disposable, friend and enemy. This is the core of all conflict: the belief that one group's security requires the annihilation of another's.
