He believed the tribe would protect him. He attacked the 'other' to gain acceptance. Now the tribe consumes him. This is the illusion of belonging. The self that defines itself by exclusion becomes the excluded. The state does not care about loyalty; it cares about enrollment in its own fantasy. The right-wing self thought it was inside the circle. The circle was never real. It was an agreement to hate the same enemies. When the enemy list runs out, the hater is next. This is the mechanical outcome of identity politics. You cannot build a fortress that only keeps others out. Eventually the fortress becomes your prison. The only escape is to see that there is no fortress, no self to defend.
