[United States / Florida] - The Detaining Self Cages the Vulnerable Body to Feed Its Phantom of Security
Event Baseline: A U.S. Department of Homeland Security investigation found an immigration detention center in Florida holding immigrants in small outdoor cages. The facility violated basic standards for hygiene, medical care, food, and safety.
The state builds a cage and calls it order. It places the other outside the circle of human concern. The detainee is not a body with needs. The detainee is a label: 'alien', 'illegal', 'threat'. That label justifies the cage. The mechanical mind does not see the flesh. It sees the category. The category is a thought. The thought is defended with violence.
This is the same logic that built every camp, every ghetto, every slave pen. The self that feels unsafe projects its fear onto the stranger. It then locks the stranger away and calls it safety. But safety achieved by dehumanizing another is an illusion. The cage does not remove the fear. It feeds it. The more you cage, the more you need to cage. The system consumes itself.
The error is simple: there is no separate self. The guard and the prisoner are one organism. When the guard cages the prisoner, he cages himself. The wall is built in the mind first. Tear down the thought, and the cage becomes unnecessary.
