[Tunisia / Activists] - The Detaining Self Starves the Voice to Feed Its Phantom of Stability

Event Baseline: In Tunisia, protesters demanded the release of four Sumud activists; one detainee's health deteriorated after more than a month on hunger strike. The state has not released them.

The state equates silence with stability. It locks up the voice that asks questions, then waits for the body to break. This is the mechanical logic of fear: the self that rules cannot tolerate any challenge, so it removes the challenger. The hunger strike is the prisoner's last refusal: the body turns against itself to force the state to see. But the state will not see, because seeing would mean losing its phantom of control. The protesters outside are another tribe demanding release, but they too are identified with their side. The cycle of detention and protest is the same software: us against them. Only when the state understands that its survival is not threatened by a dissenting mouth will the cell door open. Until then, every hunger striker is a mirror the state would rather bury.
