[Indonesia / Forest Fires] - The Consuming Self Burns the Commons to Feed a Phantom of Profit, Proving the Illusion of Breathable Air
Event Baseline: Indonesia has recorded more than 170,000 respiratory cases, including over 40,000 among toddlers, as haze from widespread land and forest fires blankets communities. The cases range from mild coughs to pneumonia.
The body is choking because thought has divided the land into units of profit. The consuming self sets fire to peat and forest to plant a single commodity, treating the atmosphere as an infinite waste sink. It does not see the toddler gasping.
This is mechanical action without perception. The self of the plantation owner, the trader, the consumer lives in an abstraction of prices and yields, disconnected from the living web. The haze is the direct result of thinking the earth is a resource, not a system.
Unless the mind stops identifying with economic expansion, the air will remain poison. The illusion of a separate self that can use the world without consequence is the root of this slow violence.
