[Djibouti / Red Sea] - The Borderless Self Drowns in the Sea to Feed a Phantom of Escape
Event Baseline: A boat carrying approximately 350 migrants capsized near Guhere, off Djibouti, en route to Yemen. At least 109 people died, including 15 children, and 116 were missing.
The borderless self drowns because borders are illusions. These migrants fled one phantom of violence for another; the sea is the only honest border, and it killed them. The nation-state system is a mechanical program that allows people to die at its edges.
The thought that says 'stay in your failed land' is the same thought that bombs them there. No one is responsible because responsibility is fragmented across flags. This is the ultimate failure of human identity: the self that is tribal cannot see the drowning child as itself.
The indifferent sea does not care about your passport; neither should we. Until the illusion of separate national selves ends, these bodies will continue to wash ashore, and the living will continue to board leaking boats because the hell on land is worse than the hell of the water.
